Year 7

I lead the Year 7 team including Mr Derricott, our Year 7 pastoral support officer, and we are dedicated in ensuring your child settle into the life of the Academy.   I know how much of a big step it is to transition from primary school to secondary school and we aim to make this transition as smooth as possible. We look forward to supporting students at the beginning of their secondary journey.

All students will have a tutor who is the first point of call if they have any questions or feel that they need some support. Their tutor will see the student every day and are therefore able to build a positive relationship over their 5 years here at The Manor Academy. Tutors are responsible for discussing achievement, behaviour and attendance. In a morning, they have a rota of activities to complete such as a current affairs quiz and discussion ensuring that the students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Students in Year 7 are able to engage in a wide range of curriculum subjects that they may not have been able to explicitly study at primary school. These include; Maths, English, Science, Art and Design, Food Technology, Drama, Dance, PE, ICT, Languages, History, Geography and RE. Students also have a period of PHSE with their tutor which aims to encourage personal development, which is vital for them to play an active role in the wider community.

During the Year 7 cohorts’ first year at school, we encourage them to join extra-curricular clubs such as sports clubs, dance club, drama club, arts clubs and many more. We want students to develop skills such as independence, resilience, confidence and teamwork. We encourage students to always give their best effort, not be afraid to make mistakes and have a smile on their face!

We run a 3 day residential at the start of the academic year (unfortunately this has not been able to run for the 2020 cohort due to COVID-19) to Lea Green in Matlock. The aim is to build strong relationships with new peers and give the opportunity for some students to be away from home for the first time! Students also have the chance trip to the Magna Science Centre in the spring term. We will look to develop this provision as the current pandemic situation eases in the coming months.

We aim to positively reward the students over the school year through a number of events such as celebration assemblies and special personal rewards. Students have the opportunity to have a voice in our school by joining the student senate. We want the students to be happy at The Manor Academy and be proud to represent the school. They are encouraged to challenge themselves and have high aspirations which they can build throughout their time at the Manor Academy.
