Our Commitment to Inclusive Learning

All children deserve a fair start in life and the Academy is committed to giving every student the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Our aim is to offer a broad, balanced curriculum personalised to the needs of every student.  Some students will need additional support to grow as successful, confident learners, this support will not be limited by background, gender, age, race or culture.  The Academy is committed to inclusive learning and we will meet the needs of all students identified with a special educational need or disability, firstly through high quality teaching, then if necessary through targeted support and intervention.

What does special educational needs & disabilities mean?

Special educational needs & disabilities, usually abbreviated to SEND, is a term that is used to encompass a wide range of needs.

A student has SEND if they:

  • have significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age
  • have a disability that prevents or hinders them from making comparable use of Academy facilities or resources as other children of the same age.

Nottinghamshire County Council's Children, Families and Cultural Services department manages provision for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, which includes making provision for:

  • autism;
  • behavioural, emotional or social difficulties;
  • hearing impairment;
  • multi-sensory impairment;
  • physical difficulties;
  • severe and complex learning difficulties and disabilities;
  • specific learning difficulties;
  • speech, language and communication needs, and
  • visual impairment.

The help available

for supporting children and young people with
special educational needs and disabilities

High-quality provision in mainstream lessons is the most important factor in helping pupils with SEND make good progress alongside their peers. The Academy has developed whole school provision maps which list the approaches to be used by teachers to help overcome barriers to learning faced by some students.

However if additional support is required then there are three levels of intervention for students:

Stage 1 Support (formerly School Action):


  • Falling significantly behind the expected 2 levels of progress
  • Demonstrating difficulty in developing literacy or numeracy skills
  • Showing persistent emotional/behavioural difficulties and not responding to behavior management strategies
  • Experiencing communication and/or interaction difficulties and making little progress despite good differentiation.

Stage 2 Support  (formerly School Action Plus):


  • Making little or no progress in specific areas over a long period of time despite good differentiation Stage 1 Support
  • Continues to experience considerable difficulty with behavior/emotion which is demonstrated to impede learning despite a well-managed Behaviour Support Plan(BSP)
  • Continues to experience communication and/or interaction difficulties that have a severe impact on learning
  • Has sensory or physical needs requiring additional specialist equipment or visits from specialists

Education, Health and Care Plan (formerly statements)

A very small number of children with severe and complex needs may require support through an Education, Care and Health Plan. If a child has lifelong or significant difficulties they will undergo a Statutory Assessment Process which is usually requested by the school but can also be requested by the parent.  This will occur where the complexity of need or lack of clarity around the needs of the child are such that a multi-agency approach to assessing that need and planning provision is required.  

The special needs of most students can be met effectively through action taken by the Academy.  Nottinghamshire County Council also provides specialist support through placement in special schools, some of which are residential, and enhanced mainstream schools - schools which have been specially equipped to support children with particular needs.

Specific help might also include specialist equipment, such as an adapted computer or software, a modified lesson plan, a hearing loop or an adjustable desk, input from specialist support services, such as speech and language therapists, mental health services, teachers with specialist knowledge, skilled job coaches, advice on mobility and getting around, or training for children and young people on managing their own behaviour and improving their social skills and understanding.

Flourish - Be the best you can be!

The Academy has a range of highly qualified staff with knowledge, skills and expertise in working with students with various Special Educational Needs. The school SENCo and two Higher Level Learning Assistants co-ordinate the provision for students with SEND across the Academy, ensuring that student needs are identified and specialist support can be put in place where necessary. Our programmes of bespoke CPD (Career Professional Development) ensures that staff within the Flourish Development Team are constantly able to attend training and courses providing them with up to the minute understanding and strategies to help meet the needs of all students. Furthermore, the team share this expertise and knowledge of up-to-date best practice with all staff on a regular basis to ensure that in-classroom provision is as good as it can be.

Through our unique support mentoring system within the Flourish Strand, we are able to monitor the progress and wellbeing of all students with SEND and to put in further interventions and support wherever necessary. This may be in the form of small group intervention sessions, one-to-one support in a certain area or through support within the classroom from one of our excellent Learning Assistants. Our ongoing provision mapping of student support also allows us to ensure that support in class is targeted to where it is needed most.
